This is the situation at Phuket International Airport last night after the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok announced it had to close outbound flights due to protestors in its departure lounge. Direct international flights and domestic flights from Bangkoks other airport Don Muang are still operating as of this morning at 7am, but the flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket or vice versa are not in service. Meanwhile the Phuket Tourist Association President Somboon Jirayut said the members prepared to take care of passengers who cannot go to Bangkok, by providing accommodation and that they would keep tourists informed of any changes. The Phuket International Airport Director Wicha Nuenlop told Andaman News that passengers should check with their airlines before going to the Phuket airport. A marine biologist team removed these animals from nursery sites and cages underwater near Mai Ton Island. They are being prepared to be released in the sea near Racha Yai Island off southern Phuket. We witnessed the collecting and releasing of the marine lives that day. A Senior Fisheries Biologist from Prachuab Kirikhan Coastal Fisheries Centre, Jintana Nugranad, explained that the whole population of giant clams in Thailand has decreased dramatically in the past ten years as people pick up giant clams and use them as decorative items for homes or eat the flesh inside for consumption. The aim of this project is to increase the population of giant clams here in the future. The Coastal Fisheries Centre joined hands with the PMBC to conserve giant clams in the Andaman Sea area. The Coastal Fisheries centre in Prachuab Kirikhan conducted the breeding and helped plant them in the nurseries with the PMBC both for conservation and economic purposes. Later on they will mainly focus on conservation of the Giant Clams only. When the giant clams were one year old or 5-7 centimeters shell length, they were transferred from Prachuab KIrikhan and nursed under water in cages for two years at Mai Ton Island off Phuket. Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong explained why they nurse the giant clams at Mai Ton: After two years they are removed to be released in other locations to spread out the population. This time they were released near Racha Yai Island. Kongkiat said this location was picked as there are local conservationists even fishermen who agreed to take care of the marine resources there: Giant clams came under lists of protected animals in Thailand since 1994. The Save Giant Clams project needs fishermen and divers cooperation to help conserve all the marine resources connected in the food chain. The representative of the local Racha island fishermen said that he was happy that the PMBC chose that area near Racha Island to plant the giant clams and will help conserve them. 'Save Giant...
In the evening of December 26th a Light Up Phuket event was held on Patong beach, as well as a similar event in Phang-Nga, in commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the Tsunami. Our reporter captured the atmosphere: Residents and visitors, Thai and foreigners, on Friday evening gathered at the Loma or Dolphin public park on Patong beach to attend the Light Up Phuket event in commemoration of the 2004 Tsunami. The Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Pirom shared his condolences and support to the families and pointed out that the incident also reflected human kindness without boundaries of nationalities. After that the popular beach of Patong was lit up by thousands of candles which participants put in the sand, some with beautiful shapes, flowers and mementos. Some relatives and friends of victims also put up and decorated photos of their loved ones to pay their annual respects. The sky was also lit up with many flying lanterns, sent with wishes for the departed. Many foreigners attended the ceremony light up on the beach to pay respects and remember, like this Norwegian resident who lost a Thai friend who used to work on the beach. He said he would come to remember her every year: Their Thai friend put up and decorated a place for pictures of her daughter who worked on the beach so that friends and foreign clients could remember her. This Australian tourist said they planned ahead to join in the ceremony to remember all victims as the incident affected many in the international community: It was similar for this group of German residents who felt emotional during the reflective atmosphere on the beach; one of them could only explain his emotions to us in German: Meanwhile in Phang-Nga province, north of Phuket, beside the washed up TOR 813 police boat site, 1,497 lanterns were released up to brighten the sky over Thakuapa. They also lit candles and observed one minute of silence in respect and remembrance of loved ones who departed. The Thai Minister of Education Jurin Laksanavisit attended the ceremony here. A group of Germans also joined in the multi-faith ceremony and candle lighting.
